A Long Time Ago

by Cordia Harris

I once slept outside,
seldom heard the
babies as they cried.
I listened to the radio,
and watched the
children when they
molded play dough.
I took late night walks,
and saw others on their
patios with their talks.
I got credit at the drug
store; not many sick
ones coming back for
more. I swam in the
nice clean ocean;
nothing evil there
taking a notion. I saw
families loving one
another for real; not
breaking hearts or
wanting to kill - I also
remembered no spirits
being low, but this was
of course, a long
time ago.
